NGX Urged to Guard Independence Ahead of Elections

The Board and Management of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) recently visited the President, sparking widespread media coverage and raising questions about the bourse's independence. Following the visit, the Group Managing Director of the NGX reported that over 500,000 millionaires have been created under the current administration.

While the exchange has recorded strong performance, market observers warn that the NGX must guard its free-market ethos. Pushing too close to the presidency risks pulling the exchange into partisan politics, which could damage its reputation as a neutral arbiter of wealth creation.

The Illusion of Paper Wealth

The claim of creating 500,000 millionaires faces scrutiny when analyzed against Nigeria's macroeconomic realities. In an inflationary period, corporate profit margins can widen significantly, sometimes bordering on profiteering, which naturally drives up stock prices.

Furthermore, the market suffers from structural float issues. Most highly capitalized stocks on the NGX trade with less than 20% free float. This low supply means even modest demand can rapidly drive up share prices, leaving institutional investors holding inflated paper values rather than liquid wealth.

Political Risks and Market Vulnerability

Government spokespersons have consistently pointed to the positive performance of the NGX as proof of successful economic reforms. However, this close association makes the market vulnerable to political crossfire as elections approach.

If opposition politicians begin to view the NGX as an extension of the ruling administration, they may target the market's vulnerabilities. For instance, Geregu Power PLC recently missed its bond repayment schedule. Such negative developments could be weaponized by political actors to trigger investor panic, leading to massive sell-offs and a crash in the All-Share Index.

To prevent this, the NGX must ring-fence its operations and assert its status as a self-regulatory organization. Maintaining strict neutrality is essential to protect the market from becoming a political battleground.
