GTCO 9M Profit After Tax Falls 12.2% to ₦614.57bn as Tax and Interest Costs Rise

Guaranty Trust Holding Company's nine-month profit after tax fell 12.2% to ₦614.57 billion as a 31.9% jump in tax expense and a 27.7% rise in interest expenses outweighed a sharp drop in loan impairment charges.

GTCO 9M Profit After Tax Falls 12.2% to ₦614.57bn as Tax and Interest Costs Rise

Costs Ate the Operating Gains

GTCO's nine-month result is a story of an operating business that held up, and a cost line that did not. Net interest income slipped to ₦935.88 billion from ₦952.14 billion as interest expenses climbed 27.7%, outpacing growth in interest earnings. The squeeze at the funding line was partly repaired lower down the account: impairment charges dropped by more than half to ₦29.02 billion, so net interest income after loan impairments actually improved to ₦906.86 billion from ₦882.35 billion a year earlier.

The non-interest lines were mixed. Net fee and commission income eased slightly to ₦182.42 billion from ₦183.22 billion, net trading gains rose to ₦79.63 billion from ₦77.21 billion, and other income fell to ₦74.78 billion from ₦85.85 billion. Together, those moves left profit before tax only modestly lower, down 2.3% to ₦879.90 billion.

The Tax Line Did the Damage

The steepest drop in the account sits below the pre-tax line. Income tax expense rose 31.9% to ₦265.32 billion, converting a small pre-tax decline into a 12.2% fall in profit after tax. The third quarter alone was weaker still: profit after tax for the three months to September fell 20% to ₦200.39 billion from ₦250.63 billion a year earlier, on pre-tax profit of ₦276.86 billion, down from ₦299.90 billion, as quarterly interest expense climbed to ₦132.21 billion from ₦98.61 billion.

Subsidiaries Still Carry the Group

The group's geographic spread cushioned the headline decline. GTBank Nigeria remained the earnings engine with profit after tax of ₦480.89 billion, down from ₦506.63 billion, on operating income of ₦934.45 billion and pre-tax profit of ₦652.67 billion. GTBank Ghana moved the other way, lifting profit after tax to ₦112.91 billion from ₦99.70 billion, with pre-tax profit of ₦173.71 billion. The two banks together contributed ₦593.80 billion of group profit. Smaller contributions came from Côte d'Ivoire (₦24.07 billion), The Gambia (₦19.13 billion), Sierra Leone (₦15.23 billion), Liberia (₦9.15 billion), Kenya (₦7.63 billion) and the United Kingdom (₦5.76 billion), while Tanzania recorded a small loss of ₦434.19 million.

For investors, the read-through is that GTCO's core lending and transaction engine remains intact — credit costs improved markedly — but the earnings conversion is being taxed, literally, by higher funding costs and a heavier tax charge. The shares closed Monday at ₦125.10, up 37.9% since the start of the year, so the market will judge the result against a stock that has already re-rated strongly in 2026.
