Tenure Limit Triggers Boardroom Succession
When Tony O. Elumelu steps down as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) on August 21, 2026, it will mark the end of an era in African banking. His retirement follows the completion of the maximum 12-year tenure limit for non-executive directors mandated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Elumelu's departure from the bank's board is not an exit from business leadership. Instead, he is redirecting his strategic focus toward real-sector industries, including energy security, power infrastructure, and cross-border industrialization.
During his tenure as chairman starting in 2014, Elumelu drove the expansion of UBA across 20 African nations. The bank also established a presence in global financial hubs including New York, London, Paris, and Dubai. Under his leadership, UBA's asset base expanded past N33 trillion, serving more than 50 million customers globally.
Nnorom Steps in to Lead UBA Board
To ensure stability, the board elected Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the incoming Group Chairman. Nnorom is a veteran chartered accountant with over 40 years of leadership experience across banking, auditing, and corporate restructuring.
Nnorom has previously served as an executive and director at both UBA and Transcorp. His deep institutional familiarity is expected to guarantee capital market stability and strategic continuity for the financial institution.
Elumelu Shifts Focus to Seplat and Energy Infrastructure
Freed from commercial banking regulatory constraints, Elumelu will concentrate his capital through Heirs Holdings into energy, power, and infrastructure. A key part of this strategy is his upcoming role at Seplat Energy, where he holds a 20% stake.
Elumelu will assume the Chairmanship of Seplat Energy on January 1, 2027. This transition follows Seplat's acquisition of ExxonMobil's shallow-water assets, operating as Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, and the progress on the ANOH Gas Processing project.
Additionally, Elumelu remains Chairman of Transcorp Group, which controls significant power generation capacity through Transcorp Power and TransAfam Power. His portfolio also includes Transcorp Hotels, healthcare, and real estate ventures under Heirs Holdings.
