Eterna 9M Profit Jumps to ₦7.34bn as Revenue Rises 72% and Equity Quadruples

The Recapitalisation Came First, the Profit Followed

Eterna entered 2026 with ₦7.77 billion of equity supporting ₦69.3 billion of borrowings, much of it short term trade finance funding a large fuel inventory. That structure left almost no room for error: a currency move or an inventory writedown could, and in 2025 did, erase the year's earnings. The ₦18.97 billion share issue changed the arithmetic. Equity now covers a far larger share of the balance sheet, total borrowings have fallen to ₦46.75 billion, and finance costs stayed broadly flat at about ₦1.93 billion even as revenue grew by almost three quarters.

That is the real story behind the profit jump. Trading conditions helped, with gross margin widening by 171 basis points as cost of sales grew more slowly than revenue, but a better funded balance sheet is what allowed the company to hold larger volumes, negotiate supplier credit and keep the margin it earned.

The Third Quarter Was Softer Than the Headline

The nine month figures flatter the most recent quarter. Third quarter revenue of ₦148.2 billion produced gross profit of ₦7.33 billion, a margin of 4.95%, below the 6.38% nine month average, and quarterly profit after tax of ₦1.64 billion. Pricing pressure returned during the quarter, and general and administrative costs rose sharply, absorbed only because volumes kept growing.

Cash quality, at least, improved with the headline. Operating cash flow swung from a ₦20.09 billion outflow to a ₦22.89 billion inflow, receivables fell, and cash balances rose to ₦15.34 billion, giving the company a buffer it did not have a year ago.

Inventory Is Still the Balance Sheet

What the recapitalisation has not changed is the model itself. Inventory of ₦68.98 billion is roughly 60% of total assets, so a 10% fall in petrol and diesel prices would create a mark to market exposure close to the entire nine month profit. Current borrowings of ₦40.1 billion also leave foreign exchange risk in place, and the company paid a ₦1.09 billion dividend soon after raising equity, a choice that will look generous if fourth quarter trading weakens.

Eterna has bought itself the funding structure to trade at this scale without one bad month threatening solvency. Whether ₦7.34 billion becomes a floor or a peak depends on holding gross margin near 6% while carrying ₦69 billion of fuel stock into the most price sensitive quarter of the year.
