The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has successfully restored the 450 megawatts Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant located in Abia State. The plant had been non-operational since 2023 following disputes over gas supply and metering issues.
Jennifer Adighije, the Managing Director of NDPHC, announced the restoration, highlighting that gas supplier TotalEnergies had suspended supply due to disparities between metering and trading points, alongside accumulated debts. Adighije stated that upon assuming office in 2024, the plant's revival became a priority.
Remedial works on the gas line have been completed, and all past due obligations to TotalEnergies have been settled, leading to the restoration of gas supply. Furthermore, extensive electromechanical works have been finished, bringing three generating units—GT1, GT22, and GT23—back online. These units are now capable of dispatching approximately 375 megawatts to the national grid.
The plant is reported to have adequate transmission infrastructure, with no significant evacuation constraints, positioning it as a viable generation facility. Adighije also commended the Abia State government for its reforms in the electricity sector, including the Aba ring-fenced power arrangement and the establishment of a state electricity regulatory agency.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State lauded the NDPHC's efforts, describing the plant's restoration as vital for the state's economic and industrial development. He noted that the plant has the potential for future expansion to 800 MW and eventually 1,100 MW, contingent on funding availability.
Governor Otti reiterated the importance of power infrastructure for economic development and mentioned his administration's focus on this area since 2023. The state government has also ring-fenced the Umuahia electricity market and is in an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to acquire distribution assets in Umuahia and surrounding areas. The state requires about 100 megawatts for the Umuahia ring-fenced area, with ongoing investments in renewable energy and mini-grid projects.
The Governor directed the state's Commissioner for Power to collaborate with NDPHC officials on the modalities for transmitting electricity from the Alaoji plant to Umuahia and other parts of the state. The Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utility, Monday Ikechukwu, assured NDPHC of the state government's commitment to partnership and readiness for commercial negotiations.
The acting Chief Operating Officer of Alaoji Power Plant, Emenogu Uzoma, confirmed that the plant is prepared for full operations.
