Margin Expansion Drives the Result

Unilever Nigeria released its unaudited results for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, showing a business growing profit faster than sales. Revenue climbed 18% to ₦184.0 billion, but gross profit jumped 34% to ₦85.5 billion, pushing gross margin up more than five percentage points to 46.4%. That margin expansion flowed through the income statement: operating profit rose 27% to ₦38.5 billion and net profit increased 20% to ₦26.4 billion, against ₦21.9 billion in the same period of 2025.

The company attributed the performance to strong brand fundamentals, disciplined operations and route-to-market execution, even as third-quarter demand softened under pressure on household incomes. Management said the focus through the quarter stayed on availability, relevant innovation and disciplined execution rather than discount-led volume.

Dividend and Shareholder Return

Alongside the results, the board approved an interim dividend of ₦2.00 per ordinary share, subject to withholding tax, amounting to ₦11.5 billion in total. The dividend will be paid to shareholders whose names appear on the register of members at the close of business on Friday, October 30, 2026.

The payout continues the company's pattern of interim distributions and, coming on the back of a 20% rise in net profit, signals management's confidence in the cash generation behind the reported earnings.

Context for Investors

Unilever's nine-month numbers land in a consumer goods sector where listed manufacturers have been separated by pricing power and cost discipline. A gross margin of 46.4%, up from 41.2%, stands out against an environment of still-tight consumer spending, and suggests the company's portfolio and distribution choices are protecting profitability even where volumes are under pressure.

The test for the final quarter will be whether that margin holds through the festive season and whether demand recovers enough to keep revenue growing at a high-teens pace. For now, the combination of double-digit sales growth, faster profit growth and an interim dividend gives shareholders one of the cleaner consumer-sector results of the current earnings season.
