The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced that telecoms operators have committed to upgrading 12,000 sites in 2026, aiming to significantly improve service quality across the nation.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, shared this commitment during a media chat in Lagos, urging subscribers for patience as these investments materialize into better user experiences.
In 2025, operators completed just over 3,000 site upgrades for coverage and capacity. The commitment for 2026 represents a substantial ramp-up in infrastructure investment and network expansion efforts.
Maida further elaborated that progress is already being made in 2026, with 2,800 site upgrades completed so far, including approximately 63 new sites.
These upgrades encompass the deployment of additional spectrum on existing 4G sites and the transformation of older 2G and 3G sites into 4G and 5G infrastructure.
The current pace of deployment indicates that the industry is already surpassing last year's performance metrics.
Additionally, Maida highlighted that operators are sustaining their investment commitments. One major telecom company has pledged $1 billion in spending for the current year, funding network expansion and service quality enhancements.
