OPay, a prominent fintech company, has outlined ambitious expansion targets, aiming to reach one billion users, support 10 million merchants, and create one million jobs. These goals were disclosed during a Media Parley held in Lagos on July 23, 2026, where executives discussed the technology infrastructure, security systems, and financial services strategy underpinning its operations.
The targets underscore the growing aspirations of digital payment companies to move beyond basic transactions. OPay seeks to expand into broader financial services, merchant solutions, and financial inclusion initiatives, particularly amidst increasing competition within Nigeria’s digital payments sector.
Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, emphasized that the company’s long-term strategy extends beyond merely operating a payment platform. She stated that the focus is on leveraging technology to broaden access to financial services and foster wider participation in the digital economy.
According to Wang, OPay’s growth ambition is to make digital financial services more accessible, secure, and reliable. She reiterated, “The company’s long-term ambition is to serve one billion users, support ten million merchants and create one million jobs.”
Wang further explained that OPay was established to promote financial inclusion through technology, building a platform that generates economic opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities. Achieving this vision, she added, has necessitated sustained investments in technology, infrastructure, and innovation.
“People may only see a successful transfer or payment notification, but behind that moment are years of investment in technology, infrastructure and innovation. Our goal is to make digital finance so dependable that customers can move money confidently without ever needing to think about the technology making it possible,” Wang stated.
She highlighted that every transaction represents a commitment between customers and the platform, demanding continuous investment in technology, infrastructure, and innovation to maintain trust as digital financial services expand.
This expansion target aligns with the ongoing competition among fintech companies in emerging markets. These firms are vying for users, merchants, and transaction volumes by offering diverse digital payments, business tools, and other financial services.
OPay’s strategy centers on constructing a technology-driven financial ecosystem that supports individuals, businesses, and merchants. The company has invested significantly in payment infrastructure, transaction processing systems, cybersecurity tools, and merchant solutions to scale its platform effectively.
Beyond its core payment services, OPay is also investing in education and innovation. This includes its expanded N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship program, which incorporates the National Innovation Challenge. However, OPay did not provide a specific timeline for achieving its one billion-user target, nor did it disclose the current gap between its existing user base and this long-term goal.
Nigeria’s digital payments market has experienced substantial growth in recent years, propelled by increased smartphone adoption, the expansion of agency banking, and concerted efforts to enhance financial inclusion. Nairametrics previously reported that OPay has grown its platform to more than 45 million users and now supports over one million merchants and businesses nationwide.
The widespread presence of OPay’s green Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals across markets, transport hubs, roadside kiosks, and neighborhood businesses reflects the increasing reliance of millions of Nigerians on digital platforms for transfers, bill payments, withdrawals, and other daily transactions. This growth underscores the rising adoption of fintech services among small businesses, traders, artisans, and communities with limited access to traditional banking infrastructure.
