The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed the Bond Chemicals factory located in Oyo State. The enforcement action was taken due to the factory's alleged discharge of untreated industrial waste into the environment.

The agency's Assistant Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, disclosed in a statement on Thursday, March 20, 2026, that the closure followed verified complaints from the public regarding wastewater with a strong, offensive odour emanating from the facility.

A compliance inspection conducted by NESREA on February 18, 2026, revealed that the factory was operating without a functional effluent treatment plant. This is a critical requirement for managing industrial waste, and its absence meant the company was directly discharging untreated wastewater, violating national environmental standards.

NESREA had previously notified the company of these infractions and issued directives to immediately cease the pollution, install and operate an effluent treatment system, and obtain the necessary regulatory permits. However, a subsequent inspection confirmed that the company had failed to comply with these directives.

“As a result, NESREA, in exercise of its statutory mandate, sealed the facility to prevent further environmental degradation and to safeguard public health,” the statement read.

The Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, emphasized the importance of strict adherence to environmental regulations by all industries. He stressed the necessity of installing and properly operating pollution control equipment.

Professor Barikor added that NESREA would intensify its monitoring and enforcement actions across the nation to ensure widespread compliance with environmental standards.

This action by NESREA underscores its ongoing efforts to combat environmental violations throughout Nigeria. In recent months, the agency has taken similar measures against multiple facilities for various offences, including the failure to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments and operating without functional waste treatment systems.

NESREA reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and the environment by ensuring all industrial operators meet established environmental standards.
