Reginald Peter Chidiebere, a wanted drug kingpin, surrendered to the NDLEA.
He had been in hiding for 13 years since escaping bail in 2013.
The arrest follows recent seizures of cocaine and heroin linked to Chidiebere, including a 49.70-kilogram heroin consignment from South Africa in February 2024.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), reaffirmed the agency's commitment to dismantling criminal networks.
NDLEA also reported arrests in Borno State, including Bulama Modu with 7,000 tramadol capsules on February 24th.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully apprehended Reginald Peter Chidiebere, a prominent figure in the drug trade, who had been at large for thirteen years. Chidiebere surrendered to the agency, marking a significant victory in the ongoing war against illicit substances in Nigeria. The development was confirmed in a statement released by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy for the NDLEA.
Chidiebere's surrender comes in the wake of the NDLEA's seizure of substantial quantities of cocaine and heroin that are reportedly linked to his operations. These seizures, made at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, appear to have cornered the fugitive, compelling his eventual capitulation.
According to NDLEA's official report, Chidiebere is implicated in orchestrating multiple shipments of heroin. Notably, a consignment weighing 49.70 kilograms, which was imported from South Africa, was intercepted in February 2024. This successful interception is a testament to the agency's enhanced surveillance and intelligence capabilities.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), emphasized the agency's unwavering resolve. He stated that the NDLEA remains committed to dismantling criminal organizations and ensuring that all individuals involved in drug trafficking face the full weight of the law. Marwa's statement underscores the agency's sustained efforts to combat high-profile drug lords and cartel leaders across the nation.
Reginald Chidiebere's criminal history dates back to his initial arrest in 2013 for involvement in a cocaine shipment into Nigeria. However, he managed to escape lawful custody by jumping bail and subsequently went underground, evading arrest for over a decade.
The NDLEA also provided an update on other recent operations. In Borno State, a 24-year-old suspect, Bulama Modu, was intercepted on Tuesday, February 24th, while transporting 7,000 capsules of tramadol along the Bama-Konduga road. This arrest is part of a series of coordinated crackdowns across multiple states aimed at disrupting drug supply chains.
The agency has been intensifying its efforts in recent years, demonstrating a strong commitment to dismantling international drug cartels. In September 2025, the NDLEA successfully dismantled a major international drug cartel in Lagos, apprehending three of its leaders following the interception of a large cocaine consignment concealed within export cargo. These actions highlight the NDLEA's proactive approach and success in tackling sophisticated drug trafficking networks.
