Fidelity Bank Plc has appointed Mrs. Amaka Onwughalu as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2026. This transition follows the completion of the tenure of the immediate past chairman.
Mrs. Onwughalu's appointment occurs at a significant time for Fidelity Bank, as the institution is consolidating key achievements in capital strengthening, international expansion, and sustained business growth.
Under the previous board leadership, the bank successfully repaid its Eurobond and completed the first tranche of its public offer and rights issue, both of which were oversubscribed. Additionally, Fidelity Bank expanded its international presence to the United Kingdom, which has bolstered market confidence and reinforced the bank's upward performance trajectory.
The bank has also navigated the recent recapitalisation drive with strong outcomes. This includes a private placement that raised over N259 billion in a single day, lifting eligible capital above the N500 billion requirement for international banks.
In light of the bank's rapid growth and heightened governance expectations, Mrs. Amaka Onwughalu is expected to guide the board through its next phase of execution. She brings a blend of experience, discipline, and strategic judgment to the role.
Mrs. Onwughalu possesses over thirty years of banking experience. This includes more than ten years in executive management positions across various sectors such as commercial banking, retail banking, treasury management, banking operations, and corporate banking.
Her career highlights include leading complex transitions at scale. Notably, she served as Group Managing Director of legacy Mainstreet Bank Limited, where she led the successful integration with Skye Bank Plc. Following this, she held the position of Deputy Managing Director until her retirement in July 2016.
Beyond her executive leadership roles, Mrs. Onwughalu's profile aligns well with the governance demands of a fast-scaling financial institution. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Blueshield Financial Services Limited.
Academically, she holds a BSc Degree in Economics from the University of Buckingham, an MSc Degree in Corporate Governance from Leeds Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, and an MBA from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She has also completed executive education programmes at INSEAD in France, IMD Business School in Lausanne, Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, and Columbia Business School in the United States.
