The Federal Government has announced the closure of one carriageway of the Eko Bridge in Lagos, effective from Sunday night, to commence emergency structural repairs. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, confirmed the development, stating that the affected section would be completely shut to ensure the safety of motorists and facilitate extensive rehabilitation work.
The repairs will involve replacing weakened structural supports and reinforcing damaged parts of the bridge. While one carriageway will remain open to traffic, the closure of the other is deemed necessary to prevent further risk and allow engineers to carry out the critical work. The Minister stated that the damaged carriageway would be fully closed by midnight on Sunday.
Minister Umahi emphasized the government's commitment to safety, noting, "We will not allow people to endanger their lives. We are responsible administration, and it is a problem not caused by us but a challenge before us." He added that officials from the Federal Ministry of Works are directed to collaborate with the Lagos State Government to launch public awareness campaigns and identify alternative traffic routes.
The repair plan includes lifting an entire span of the affected section to access the pier and pier cap for thorough structural repairs. This will involve additional piling, reinforcement works, and the replacement of damaged piles beneath the bridge. Buildwell Construction Company and professional divers will conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain the full extent of the structural damage before the final repair design is completed.
