The Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON) has identified the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals as a crucial support for the nation's aviation sector. The refinery is currently providing over 95 per cent of the Jet A1 fuel consumed within Nigeria and has exported 1.1 billion litres of aviation fuel to Europe between March and April 2026.
AON spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo stated that the refinery's output has been instrumental in maintaining domestic airline operations amidst global supply disruptions and rising fuel costs. He emphasized that for Nigerian airlines, Dangote is a transformative and essential supplier.
Despite the consistent supply from the Dangote refinery, airline operators are experiencing significant operational challenges due to soaring Jet A1 prices. Okonkwo attributes these price hikes to alleged manipulative practices within the downstream distribution chain.
Okonkwo highlighted that some fuel marketers are reportedly creating artificial scarcity, leading to disproportionate price increases, even when supply from the refinery is stable. Airline operators have reported Jet A1 price increases of up to 300 per cent since the onset of the Middle East crisis.
“We consider this exploitation. The refinery has not indicated any shortage, yet we are witnessing artificial scarcity and unjustifiable price increases. What airlines pay does not reflect depot prices,” Okonkwo remarked, suggesting market racketeering.
Allen Onyema, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, echoed these sentiments following a meeting between AON and the Federal Government. He described the situation as deeply concerning, especially since the Dangote refinery offers its products at more competitive rates.
Industry data indicates that the Dangote Refinery exported approximately 876,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel to Europe during the specified period, with about 456,000 tonnes in March and an additional 420,000 tonnes by April 20, 2026.
These export volumes demonstrate the refinery's expanding capabilities and enhanced logistics. This development reinforces Nigeria's growing influence in the global downstream oil and gas sector while simultaneously bolstering domestic energy security.
