Tinubu Approves N17 Billion Fund for 8,804 Wards

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a N17 billion community-led development fund to drive grassroots interventions across Nigeria’s 8,804 wards. This initiative signals a significant shift towards community-driven development, empowering local organizations to execute projects that address priority needs.

The approval was disclosed in a statement by the Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Ado Bako, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The fund is earmarked for direct implementation within each ward, ensuring that solutions are tailored to local contexts and directly improve livelihoods.

Community-Led Service Delivery

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that this approach places communities at the center of development. By enabling each ward to identify and implement its priority needs, the government aims to unlock practical solutions that strengthen service delivery where it matters most.

Interventions funded by this initiative will span critical areas such as nutrition support, the provision of essential health commodities, and minor infrastructure upgrades in schools, health facilities, and sanitation systems. This holistic approach is designed to foster sustainable development at the grassroots level.

Implementation and Oversight

The implementation of the community development fund is set to commence on March 1, 2026, with an expected completion date of December 2026. To ensure effective execution, monitoring, and accountability, the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation have been directed to release the N17 billion into a ring-fenced intervention account.

A Community-Based National Social Action Fund Taskforce has been established to oversee the implementation of the program. Furthermore, a Programme Management Unit will be domiciled within the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to coordinate activities and ensure alignment with national development goals.

This program builds upon earlier reforms, including the creation of the Social Action Fund in September 2023 and the approval of the Community-Based Procurement Platform in January 2026, indicating a sustained commitment to enhancing community participation in governance and development.
