Dangote Refinery Empowers Local Talent with Induction of 330 Graduate Engineers

Abuja, Nigeria – Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals (DPRP) has taken a significant stride in deepening local content by formally inducting a fresh cohort of 330 graduate engineers into its technical workforce. The induction ceremony took place at the refinery complex, marking a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s engineering talent pool.

Key Highlights

  • 330 graduate engineers inducted into the Dangote Refinery technical workforce.
  • Engineers selected from leading tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
  • Focus areas include Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, and Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Programme emphasizes bridging theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience.
  • Underscores DPRP's commitment to local capacity building and operational excellence.

These new intakes join their colleagues who have already benefited from comprehensive training, technical mentorship, and hands-on rotational exposure across various critical units within the refinery and petrochemicals value chain. The move signifies the organization’s ongoing investments in technical capacity development and robust succession planning.

David Bird, Chief Executive Officer of the Refinery, highlighted the induction as a strategic initiative aimed at building local capacity, enhancing Nigeria’s engineering expertise, and ensuring sustained operational excellence. He commended the Engineer Trainees for their performance and encouraged them to embrace continuous learning and skill improvement in the conducive work environment provided at the world-class refinery.

“You have been prepared for what your expectations would be while working in a world-class modern refinery like Dangote Refinery,” Bird charged the new engineers, urging them to contribute their best in their respective operational areas.

The trainee engineers represent core disciplines including Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Instrumentation. Their induction is a testament to DPRP's dedication to nurturing local talent and establishing a strong pipeline of skilled professionals to support its operations.

As part of their rigorous training, the young engineers were divided into groups to present and defend projects. These projects focused on offering practical solutions to current and future challenges within the plant, including the modeling of entire plant processes and research and development initiatives. Management members closely evaluated their learnings and potential innovations.

Dr. Ebele Oputa, Assistant General Manager, Human Asset Management at Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Coordinator of the programme, emphasized that the training is meticulously designed to enable the young engineers to effectively integrate their theoretical knowledge with practical experience gained at the refinery. “This is meant to develop their practical and leadership skills over time to effectively guide their teams in professional and personal development,” she stated.

Dr. Oputa further explained that the program fosters connections with industry professionals, helps identify individual strengths and weaknesses, and aids in setting clear career goals and developing achievable roadmaps. The hands-on training is also geared towards boosting the engineers' confidence and preparing them for the demands of the workplace.

The induction process for the trainee engineers includes induction, observation and shadowing at the Refinery, in-class equipment training, hands-on practical training at the Refinery, followed by unit-wise training in the production area, and supervised work with coaching for the remainder of their tenure.

The trainee engineers expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity, describing their inclusion in the preparatory program for becoming staff at the world’s largest single-train refinery as a dream come true. They pledged to uphold the confidence placed in them by the management.
