The MTN CHAMPS grand finale at the Lekan Salami Stadium saw thrilling performances on its penultimate day, with multiple track and field finals decided.
In the senior men’s 400m, Ezekiel Asuquo of Team MTN triumphed with a time of 46.60s. He was followed by Benin Republic’s Jules Waiga (47.23s) and Nigeria’s Wisdom Alexander (47.51s).
Miracle Uwem Donald also delivered for Team MTN in the women’s 400m, achieving a personal best of 54.07s for the gold medal. Joy Ayomide (54.61s) and Adepoju Adedoyin (54.84s) secured the silver and bronze medals.
The junior men’s 400m race was highly contested, with David Dominion Udoh narrowly beating Ghana’s Kazali Iddrisu to retain his title for Nigeria. Udoh clocked a lifetime best of 46.62s, while Iddrisu finished in 46.68s, and Tosin Esan took third place in 47.30s.
Treasure Okereke emerged victorious in the junior women’s 400m, crossing the finish line in 53.30s. Becky Ebiyade secured the silver medal with 53.89s, and Faith Ezechukwu earned bronze in 54.04s.
The 200m events also saw preliminary rounds. In the senior men’s 200m semi-finals, Ghana’s Marizuk Shaibu was the fastest qualifier with 21.05s. Osama Chibueze (21.14s) and Enoch Adegoke (21.20s) also advanced.
Taofikat Sulaimon led the senior women’s 200m semi-finals, clocking 24.40s. Purpose Excellence Akinpelu was close behind at 24.43s, with Ofure Johnbull taking third in 24.78s.
For the junior men’s 200m, Kazali Iddrisu posted the fastest semi-final time of 21.30s. Liberty Okon followed with a personal best of 21.51s, and Paul Otagba also set a personal best of 21.55s.
Rosemary Nwankwo topped the junior women’s 200m standings with 23.53s, narrowly ahead of Tejiri Ugoh (23.58s) and Mariam Jegede (23.74s).
In field events, African bronze medallist Samuel Kure won the men’s javelin with a throw of 79.39m, just shy of his personal best. Prosper Eguakun and Oluwatobiloba Bamidele took the other podium spots.
Gowon Oghenerunor claimed the junior men’s long jump title with a best leap of 7.22m. Olaoluwa Akindunbi and Mekioniso Messiah won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
